My uncle told me to skip the permit for my Academy Acres patio, and the city caught it 4 months later
He swore nobody checks in Albuquerque, but an inspector spotted the uncovered footer while driving by and I ended up paying $400 in fees plus tearing out the slab, so has anyone else gotten nailed by the permit office on a small backyard job?

Feel your pain on this one. My neighbor warned me the same thing when I put up a shed in my backyard, said nobody would ever notice. Six weeks later a guy from the city shows up because someone on my street called it in, not even an inspector just driving around. Cost me $250 and I had to move the whole thing two feet off the property line. Small jobs are the ones that get you because you figure why bother with paperwork for something so tiny. Turns out the permit office does not care how small it is, they just want their cut.
