Saw a house on San Mateo with a full stucco removal and I think it's a mistake
They stripped it down to the block, which just seems like asking for water and sun damage here. Has anyone actually had a good experience going without stucco in this climate?

Yeah, "stripped down to the block" is a huge red flag. The block alone is porous and will suck up water like a sponge. You'll get moisture inside the walls, and the sun will bake the mortar over time. I had to fix this on a place I owned, and it was a constant fight with efflorescence and cracks. They need a proper barrier coat at the very least, or they're just asking for mold and repair bills.

Stripped down to the block" sounds like a nightmare. I'd be worried about the exact same things.
