The plumber who ghosted me after the trench collapsed in my front yard

Was replacing the main line from the street to the house off of Candelaria last March. The guy I hired had good reviews and a fair price, $3,800 all in. He dug the trench on a Tuesday morning, hit a rock shelf nobody saw coming, and the walls caved in right after lunch. He got his excavator out but then just stopped answering calls and texts. No timeline, no refund talk, nothing. I spent two days calling other shops and explaining the situation before I found a crew that finished the job for another $2,100. Lesson learned about paying half up front and getting a written contract with a completion date. Has anyone else had a contractor vanish mid-job around here, and what did you do to get your deposit back?
