Vent: my 1970s Ruidoso kitchen went from orange countertops to open shelf in 18 months, was the open shelf worth it?

When we bought our house near Nob Hill in March 2023 the kitchen still had the original orange laminate counters and a dropped ceiling with a single bulb, and by last fall it was open shelving with quartz. My wife says the shelves make the room feel twice as big, but I'm the one dusting every bowl and plate once a week. Did anyone here rip out their upper cabinets and regret it, or did the extra light win you over?
