GPS unit from 2008 still perfectly accurate, maps are 15 years out of date though

Took my old Garmin Nuvi on a road trip to Asheville last weekend and it routed me through a road that's been closed since 2015, had to backtrack 12 miles using my phone, anyone else keep old GPS units around just because they still turn on?

Holy crap, a road that's been gone for 10 years? That's wild, I figured those old maps were bad but not that bad.

Not that crazy when you think about it. Mapping remote areas is hard and nobody's paying to keep those records current. The real issue is people trusting these maps for backcountry navigation without cross checking. Outdated maps have killed people before, not just wasted a few hours of driving. The GPS in your phone is pulling from the same old datasets half the time anyway.
