That $3 VCR from the flea market in Reno ate my only copy of my wedding tape

I was at my folks' place in Sparks trying to digitize it last Saturday, the machine chugged the tape halfway through and spit out a tangled ribbon, so I cracked the case, pulled the pinch roller, cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip, got the tape back in, and it played fine, but did anyone else's old deck do that right after you finally trusted it?
