Why does nobody mention the $15 VHS rewinder that outlived three DVD players
I bought a used VHS rewinder for $15 at a flea market in Akron back in 2009 because my old VCR kept eating tapes when I rewound them. That little black box with the spinning spools has been sitting under my TV for 16 years and it still works fine. A DVD player I paid $90 for died after two winters, and a Blu-ray player I got for $120 lasted maybe four years before it started skipping. The rewinder has no menus, no firmware, no updates, just a motor and a button. I keep it around even though I barely watch tapes anymore because every time I think about tossing it, it spins up like nothing happened. Last month I dug out some old home movies from a family trip to Myrtle Beach and it handled all six tapes without a hiccup. Is there any newer gadget in your house that keeps outlasting the stuff you paid ten times more for?

A buddy of mine has a similar story with a cheap coffee grinder he got at a garage sale for like eight bucks. He's gone through three fancy burr grinders that cost over a hundred each, all of them dying within a couple years, and that little garage sale one just keeps grinding away. The thing is, those old simple machines had maybe one moving part and no circuit board to fry. My friend says the fancy ones all have some sensor or chip that fails, and when it goes, the whole unit is trash. Meanwhile the cheap one just has a motor and a switch, so there's almost nothing that can break. I keep telling him to hold onto it forever because they don't make stuff like that anymore.
