Bought a cheap multimeter from a discount site and it cost me a whole day
I needed a backup meter and grabbed one for $25 online. It gave me a false reading on a fridge compressor, so I spent hours checking other parts. I finally swapped it with my old Fluke and found the real problem in ten minutes. Anyone else have a story about a tool that wasted your time?

That exact thing happened with a cheap voltage tester I bought at a hardware store. It lit up on a dead circuit, so I spent an afternoon tracing wires that were fine. A buddy finally let me borrow his good tester, and it showed no power right away. Sometimes the cheap tool isn't just bad, it actively sends you in the wrong direction.

it actively sends you in the wrong direction" Yeah that's my specialty. I bought a $15 clamp meter once that told me a dead battery was fully charged. Spent a whole afternoon jumping a car that didn't need it. Cheap tools are like that friend who confidently gives bad advice.
