Just realized I was overcomplicating the whole 'check the door switch' thing on front-load washers.
For years I'd pull the whole front panel off first, but after a call in Green Bay last winter where a homeowner just pointed at the obvious scorch marks around the switch housing, I now just shine a light and look for that before I even grab a screwdriver, anyone else have a simple visual check that saves them time?

Oh, scorch marks are actually pretty common on those.

Scorch marks around the switch housing? That sounds like a serious fire hazard waiting to happen. I'm honestly shocked that a washer could get to that point without someone noticing a burning smell or something. It makes me want to go check my own machine right now. Your old method of taking the panel off first seems like the careful way to do it, but I guess that visual check really does save a ton of time if the problem is that obvious. Still, seeing scorch marks on an appliance in someone's home is pretty alarming.
