My old boss told me to always check the drain pump first on a front loader, and he was dead wrong.

I worked for a guy in Tampa for about two years, and his big rule was that if a front load washer won't drain, you go straight for the drain pump. He said it was the most common fail point, period. So for months, I'd pull the machine, check the pump, find nothing, and then waste time putting it back together before finding the real issue. The real fix was almost always a clog in the drain hose or the filter housing, not the pump itself. I spent maybe 30 extra minutes on each call because of his bad advice. Now I start with the easy stuff: the filter and the hose run. It saves so much time. Has anyone else had a 'golden rule' from a mentor that just made your job harder?

Your boss had a point though... a worn out impeller or a seized motor is a real fix, not just a clog. Starting with the pump can actually find the permanent problem faster sometimes.

Yeah, "a real fix" is what you want, not just chasing clogs.
