One call about a bad dryer belt changed how I quote repairs

Had a customer in Denver yesterday, older lady, called about a squealing dryer. I figured it was the belt, standard $90 out the door. She says, 'Can you just fix it, or do I need a whole new machine?' That question hit me. I've been doing this 12 years and I never ask what their budget is before I quote. I just assume. Now I ask first. She ended up needing a belt and new idler, cost her less than half what she was scared of. Anyone else adjust how they talk to customers after one of those moments?
