PSA: My uncle swore a failing thermal fuse on a dryer would always trip the breaker, but I just fixed one that didn't.

He'd been saying that for 20 years, but this Whirlpool model just had a dead heating element and a blown fuse with no breaker trip. Has anyone else run into a silent thermal fuse failure like that?

Yeah, fuses can blow without tripping the breaker.

Actually used to believe a breaker would always catch it first. Reading what @thomas862 said made me look it up. Turns out fuses can fail on their own if they're old or worn out, even if the breaker is fine. The breaker protects the whole circuit, but the fuse has its own job. So a blown fuse without a tripped breaker makes total sense now.
