Swapped out a Frigidaire ice maker for a Whirlpool model last month - huge difference

I was tired of those cheap Frigidaire ice makers cracking after a year, so I tried a Whirlpool WR49X101 head on the same line setup. It was a pain to modify the bracket with a drill, but the ice output is way more consistent and less jamming. Has anyone else tried mixing brands on ice makers or do you stick with OEM parts?

Dude YES. I did almost the exact same thing last year with my Samsung fridge. That stock ice maker was straight garbage, kept freezing up and making those tiny hollow cubes. I swapped in a GE part I found on clearance and holy crap the difference is night and day. Had to dremel a little notch in the mounting plate and reroute the water line like an inch over, took maybe an extra 20 minutes. But now the cubes come out solid and clear, no more clumping together in the bin. Honestly I think half these appliance companies source the worst possible internals just to save a buck, mixing brands is the way to go if you got a drill and some patience.

Wait did your buddy end up having trouble with the water line reroute? My friend tried something similar with a LG fridge and a Kenmore ice maker and he said the hardest part was getting the bracket to sit right without blocking the door.
