A $40 soil probe convinced me to stop guessing on root flare depth
I had been planting a row of maples at a job site in Boise and just eyeballing the root flare, which usually worked out fine. I grabbed a $40 soil probe on a whim and started checking the depth at each tree, and about half of them had the flare buried 2 to 3 inches too deep. How do you all check flare depth when you are planting a bunch of trees in a day?
I read somewhere that root flare depth is one of the top reasons young trees fail, and it usually happens because we trust our eyes instead of a tool. The problem is that 2 or 3 inches is really easy to miss when you're moving fast and the soil is dark. Sounds like that probe paid for itself on the very first job.
