Finally got that big silver maple down in one piece
Honestly, I had to pick between a straight drop into the yard or a more complex rigging job to save the client's garden. We went with the rigging, using a 5/8 inch line and a portawrap to lower each section. Took all morning, but not a single hosta got crushed. Anyone have a go-to knot for that kind of controlled descent?

Good call on the rigging. For that setup, a running bowline on the piece you're cutting is my go-to. It cinches down tight and won't slip when you shock load it on the portawrap. I'll tie a figure eight on a bight on the other end for the portawrap. Lets you adjust the friction real easy as you lower each chunk. Sounds like you got it done clean.

Yeah, the running bowline is solid for that. I've seen guys try a clove hitch on the piece and it can roll out if the wood's slick. Always keep a carabiner on the portawrap side too, makes swapping the figure eight loop way faster between cuts.
