I figured growth rings were just a textbook thing until I counted 62 on a white oak stump in Dayton
A homeowner on the east side of Dayton had me take down a white oak that was crowding her garage. She said her grandpa planted it when the house was built in 1961. I laughed, because everyone says that about every old tree. When I dropped the stump and sanded it down, I counted 62 rings. She was off by one year. I got goosebumps standing there. I do this work for money, but that was the first time a tree actually talked back to me. Any of you ever cross check a ring count against a story like that? Did it hold up?
