Is safety gear actually safer, or just more awkward? Weigh in on the harness debate

I've watched two crews work the same 60 foot maple this month, one in full climbing harnesses and the other with just flip lines and a lanyard, and honestly the old school guys finished in half the time with no close calls, so are we adding gear for genuine protection or just insurance liability, and has anyone else seen the stats that say falls are down but sprains are up since everyone went full OSHA?

That 60 foot maple with the flip line crew, did either of them actually test their gear after a hard catch, or just trust the leather and hope...
