Just lost a client's prized maple because of a bad cabling job from 3 years ago

I was removing a dead branch last week in Arlington and found a cable that had sawed halfway through the trunk because it was installed too tight. The whole tree has to come down now and the client is furious at who did it. Anyone else run into old botched cabling jobs coming back to haunt people?

Idk, I mean yeah it can be a problem but I've seen plenty of old cables that were fine for decades too. Maybe it's just me but some of those horror stories get blown out of proportion a little bit. Like @linda_mason82, I pulled a cable out of a 30 year old oak last month and it had barely touched the cambium, just some surface scarring. Three years is pretty quick for a cable to saw halfway through, makes me wonder if there was already some rot or a weak spot in that trunk to begin with.

Have you seen those old cables that basically turn into a hacksaw over time with tree movement? It's a ticking time bomb with no easy fix once they dig in that deep.
