My neighbor insisted I cut a root flare clean, and it saved a big maple
He's not an arborist, just an old guy who's lived here 50 years. I was about to bury it deeper, but he pointed out the girdling root starting. Has anyone else had a non-pro give you solid tree advice that worked out?

Root flare stuff is overblown sometimes.

Agree with you Eric, people act like missing the root flare by an inch is a death sentence but I've seen trees planted a few inches deep do just fine for YEARS. @rivera.susan the real problem is usually something ELSE like girdling roots or bad soil, not the planting depth itself.

Wait, you think it's overblown? I've seen so many trees die from being planted too deep. What specific situations make you say it doesn't matter as much?
