Realized I was girdling trees with my own tie job

I spent 5 years strapping nursery trees tight to stakes thinking that was the right move. Last spring a customer pointed out bark damage and I finally looked up what proper loosening looks like, my trees were slowly strangling themselves. Anyone else have a habit they stuck with way too long before a client called it out?

Ngl that stung a little reading this because I did the same thing with some young maples I planted near my shop. Used those cheap rubber straps and cranked them down thinking tighter meant better support. Took a landscaping crew pointing it out before I checked the trunks and saw the bark all rubbed raw and deformed. Trees are still alive but they've got that weird hourglass shape now, reminded me every time I walk past them. Good on you for actually fixing it, most guys just double down.
