Spent $400 on a hydraulic wood splitter for my side gig and it paid itself off in two weekends

Everyone told me to stick with a manual maul for splitting firewood, said it builds character. But after three weekends of wrecking my shoulder on red oak, I rented a 20-ton splitter for $80 and bought my own the next week. Has anyone else found that spending money on a mechanized tool early just saves your body for the long run?

Yeah, "builds character" is what people say when they've never thrown their back out on a knotty log.

Richard, you nailed it with that one. My dad was big on the "builds character" line and I think he just liked watching me suffer through chores honestly. There's nothing character building about a back that won't stop hurting for a week. People just say that to make themselves feel better about making you do hard work.
