That maple looked fine until I saw the bark inclusion from above
If I hadn't checked from the lift, the whole limb could have failed. Always take a second look from a different angle before making the cut.

Seriously, angles are everything. I saw a video last week where a guy almost took down a tree that looked solid, but from his buddy's phone video on the ground, you could see a huge crack wrapping around the backside of the trunk. It just looked like a shadow from his position. Your lift story totally reminds me of that. A straight-on view misses so much, especially with bark inclusions or splits hiding in plain sight. Getting that second perspective literally saves trees, and bones.
