Vent: I chose to prune my maples in June instead of waiting for fall, and two of the three are now pushing weak shoots
Everyone in my local arborist group keeps saying you wait until late summer or early fall to prune maples, but a client in Bend had a limb rubbing their roof and wanted it handled now. I went ahead and made the cuts in mid June with a pole saw and hand pruner, sealed nothing, and just watched. Eight weeks later two of the three trees are throwing out skinny little water sprouts along the cut line, and the third is fine. I know the sap bleeding in spring is mostly cosmetic, but does anyone have real data on timing cuts for roof clearance, or am I just wrong on this one?
Wait, two of the three went weak but the third was totally fine after the same cuts? That part blows my mind, same saw, same day, same damn tree species. Makes me wonder if it's less about June and more about how each tree handles the wound.
