Went against my mentor's advice about pruning oaks in summer and I'm glad I did
Old school arborist Tom told me for 3 years never touch an oak between April and October. Last month I had a storm damaged white oak in Austin that was gonna hit a house if I waited. I did a couple strategic reduction cuts and the tree bounced back fine, no wilt or bugs. Now I'm wondering if that old rule is more about preventing fresh wounds from bark beetles in certain regions. Anybody else break the no-summer-oak rule and get away with it?

Question is if that oak is REALLY gonna hold up through the next big storm.
