Blew $95 on a cheap ground-penetrating radar kit online, and I'm split on whether to warn people off or blame myself
Found a listing for a "portable GPR kit" for $95 and thought I'd sweep a 2 acre field near Athens, Georgia where a buddy found surface flint, but the thing couldn't see past 6 inches and the software needed a laptop from 2009 to even run. Now I'm stuck between two camps: one says hobbyist gear is junk and you should save up for a real survey or just ask a local college, the other says cheap tools still teach you how to read ground and the loss is worth the lesson. Where do you land, and did you eat the cost or send it back?
Returned mine and ate the shipping cost, since the seller made it clear the specs were "as listed" and I didn't feel like fighting over $12. What worked for me was calling the geology department at the local college and asking if any grad student needed field hours, because one guy met me out there with a real unit for a case of beer. Save the money, make the call, and let the cheap kit be a lesson about reading the fine print instead of a sunk cost.
