Drove 4 hours to see the Cerutti Mastodon bones in person instead of just reading the paper about them
When that 2017 Nature study dropped claiming humans broke mastodon bones in San Diego 130,000 years ago, I had a choice: trust the summary articles or go look at the actual fossils at the San Diego Natural History Museum. I picked the drive from Phoenix, and standing over those bones in person, the spiral fractures and hammerstone marks are way more convincing than any writeup made them sound. The whole trip only cost me about $60 in gas. But here is what bugs me, why do so many people still call this site junk science when the break patterns clearly are not natural? Anyone else been to see them and walked away thinking the critics never actually looked at the bones up close?
