Dug up 40 pounds of "artifacts" in my uncle's garden that turned out to be a 1950s trash dump
Last April I was helping my uncle clear a back corner of his lot outside Albany and started pulling up glass bottles and rusty cans, so I got excited and bagged everything like it was a real site. Turns out it was a trash pit from around 1955, and I know because I matched a milk bottle maker's mark to a local dairy that closed that year. People online keep calling stuff like this a buried village or a lost settlement, which bugs me because one household's dump is the most common thing you'll ever dig, not some big discovery. Can anyone share a time when they misread a pile of old junk as something way bigger than it was?
Man, I did the exact same thing with a pile of old bricks behind my buddy's place and spent a whole weekend telling everyone I found a cellar from the 1800s. It was just where the previous owner dumped busted pavers in the 80s, and I felt pretty dumb about it lol. Old trash is just old trash most of the time, and people really do love turning a dump into a lost town.
