Got scammed by a fake Roman fibula from an Ohio seller
I collect small Roman coins, nothing crazy, just a hobby. Last month I found a listing for a 'legionary fibula' from a seller in Ohio, only $45. The photos looked legit, nice green patina, claimed it came from an old estate sale. I got it in the mail and something felt off, the edges were too clean, no wear patterns anywhere. I took a jeweler's loop to it and spotted tiny layer lines under the patina. That coating was just paint, enamel paint, and the fibula matched a free STL file I found on a museum site in about 10 minutes. The seller blocked me when I asked for a refund, PayPal sided with me after I filed a dispute. Lesson learned, I only buy from established dealers with proven provenance now. Has anyone else gotten burned by fake antiquities online and caught it before it was too late?
