Had to choose between a trowel I could trust and a brush that might fall apart

Last month at a dig site near Santa Fe, I had to pick between two field tools. My old trowel has a wobbly handle but the brush was just a cheap dollar store find with bristles falling out after one day. I went with the trowel hoping to fix it later, but halfway through scraping a test pit the handle snapped clean off. Lost a good hour looking for a backup in my truck. Has anyone else had to choose between tools that both let you down?

Oh man, I feel your pain on that “wobbly handle” dilemma. I had almost the exact same thing happen with a trowel I'd used for years, the handle felt loose but I kept thinking "next dig I'll fix it." Then it just gave out mid scrape and I was stuck trying to clean a test unit with a flat rock for an hour. It's such a rotten feeling when you make the call between two crummy options and still lose.

I used to think I was just unlucky with tools, @spencerw72, but you're right, that moment of failure really changes your whole view on fixing things early.
