I spent years cleaning artifacts wrong, a retired conservator in Santa Fe set me straight
I used to scrub pottery shards with a toothbrush and water at every dig, figured dirt removal was harmless. A conservator stopped me at a site near Chaco Canyon and showed me how that erases residue needed for dating, plus bristles scratch surfaces. Took a $15 soft brush and dry cleaning to undo the habit, anyone else make this mistake early on?
