My cheap metal detector died after 20 minutes in the field last Saturday
I drove an hour out to an old farm site near Springfield and the thing just started screeching nonstop before going dead. Turns out the battery compartment corroded from a leaky AA I didn't catch. Anyone else have a detector give out right when you're about to find something good?

Oh man, that's a classic case of the detector gremlins getting you right when you're most excited. I swear those things have a sixth sense for timing (and battery leaks). Last summer mine died because the coil cable frayed from being stuffed in my trunk, and I spent the next hour just kicking dirt. At least you got 20 minutes, I once had a Fisher F2 that lasted exactly as long as it took to walk from the car to the first hole.

Ugh, @charles_green, that Fisher F2 story hurts just to read it. I mean, it's like the universe is actively messing with us, especially when we've got that rare free afternoon. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather find a beat-up wheatie than deal with gear that quits before I've even dug a hole.
