My old dig partner said to bag my trowel finds wet, and that was dead wrong
Back in 2019 I was working a site outside Tucson with a guy named Ray who had 20 more seasons in than me. He said to drop pottery and bone straight into plastic bags while still damp so they would not crumble, so I did exactly that for 3 weeks. By the time we hit the lab, half the sherds had mold fuzz on them and the faunal bone labels were a soggy mess. The lab lady pulled me aside and said dry them slow in the shade first, then bag. What is the worst field tip you got handed early on that turned out to be wrong?
