PSA: I tried using a metal detector at a public park in Springfield and got a surprise

My cousin lent me his Garrett Ace 300 for the day, so I went to a field near the old train station. I was just hoping for some modern coins, but after about twenty minutes I got a strong signal and dug up a small, tarnished brass button with an eagle design. It looks really old, maybe from a Civil War uniform. Has anyone here found something similar in an unexpected place?

That eagle button find is cool, I saw a documentary about Civil War relics turning up in parks.

That documentary probably focused on the east coast. Out here in the Midwest, most of the eagle buttons we dig up are from the War of 1812 or earlier militia units. I've seen a few myself that date way before the Civil War, barbararamirez. The design stayed pretty similar for a long time.

Check out simon_davis's point, those eagle buttons can be way older than you'd guess.
