Saw a crew last week in Mesa not screening their spoil piles properly

They were digging a test trench near the old canal and just tossing everything into one big heap. Last month, a site in Tucson lost a lot of small bone fragments because they did the same thing. Three years ago, a colleague in Phoenix missed a carved stone bead that way. It's a fast way to lose data forever. Has anyone else had to stop a dig team from rushing this step?

Can you just get them to slow down and use a tarp?

Wait, they weren't using a tarp?

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but I don't think slowing down is the main fix here. Tarping is a solid idea if the ground is soft or if you're worried about mud, but it can be a real hassle if it's windy or if you're not set up right. Plus, some folks working on a roof might not want to deal with a tarp flapping around and getting in the way of their tools or footing. Tbh, I've seen more problems from crews rushing and skipping the tarp than from them working at a steady pace without one. Ngl, it feels like sometimes the tarp is just an extra step that people use to cover up other bad habits, like poor communication or equipment issues.
