Spent $80 on a metal detector for a beach trip and it actually paid off

My family went to the Outer Banks last month and I bought a basic metal detector on a whim. On the second day, I found a silver Spanish coin from the 1700s washed up near the dunes. A local museum expert confirmed it was real, likely from a shipwreck. That $80 gadget found a piece of history I can hold in my hand. Has anyone else had a small investment in gear lead to a genuine find?

My best find with a metal detector was a rusty bottle cap, and I was still weirdly proud of it. I guess my $60 is still waiting for its big historical payoff, unlike your amazing coin. What did your family think when you pulled that out of the sand?
