That theory about Cahokia being a small settlement... I think we got it backwards
I was at the Mound 72 excavation in Illinois back in 2012, and we found a wooden post circle that sat right at the edge of the main plaza. A supervisor said it was just a fence, but I pushed to isotope-test the soil around it, and it turned out to be a marker for solstice alignments. Has anyone else run into pros dismissing site features before looking at the data?

Read that study from Berkeley that said it was way more local than they expected.
