That time a dig supervisor told me dirt color doesn't matter and I about lost it
I was working a site in northern New Mexico last summer, and this new supervisor kept skipping the Munsell charts on our soil logs. He said 'just eyeball it, the color doesn't tell us anything important.' I had to pull him aside and show him three separate excavation reports where a simple hue shift pointed us straight to a buried hearth feature. Why would anyone with field training ignore basic soil reading? Has anyone else run into a lead archaeologist who just wing it on documentation?

Jeez yeah, I had one who thought Munsell was a waste of time too. I just started logging the colors myself during the bucket check before he even got there, and that shut him up pretty quick.

Right? @wyattbennett that's the move honestly. Had a field guy who swore color logging was a waste too, so I just pulled out my phone and started snapping shots of the bucket tags. He didn't say a word after that.
