That week I excavated a Roman latrine in York and found a silver ring
Everyone told me latrines are worthless. Just dirt and waste. But last September I spent 5 days sifting through one near the old wall. Found a silver ring with a tiny carved face on it. Museum curator said it's probably 3rd century. Best week of my career. Has anyone else had luck digging where people said not to bother?

I read somewhere that Roman latrines in Britain actually have a pretty good track record for small personal items. People dropped stuff down the hole by accident all the time. A silver ring with a carved face sounds like a solid find, those are usually associated with early Christian or mystery cult symbols. Makes you wonder how many other rings and coins are still sitting in those pits waiting for someone to sift through the muck.
