The Hohokam canals near Tempe put modern drainage to shame

I drove out to the ruins last month and walked along a section of canal that's still visible after 800 years. The thing that got me was the gradient, it's nearly flat but water clearly moved through it for miles. They cut this out with digging sticks and baskets, no draftsmen, no laser levels. Meanwhile my neighbor paid $14,000 to get his yard graded and it still pools water after a storm. Has anyone else looked at ancient water systems and just felt embarrassed for modern contractors?

Contractors gotta eat too but lmao yeah. 14k for a puddle while these dudes moved a river with sticks. Bet they didnt need a permit either.
