Took me 8 digs to realize I was cleaning artifacts wrong the whole time

Spent 3 seasons scrubbing pottery with a stiff brush before a visiting professor from Arizona State told me I was removing the very residues that tell us what was stored in them, so has anyone else had a basic technique completely flipped on them by a random expert?

Wait, hold on - you were using a stiff brush on pottery this whole time? I mean, I've heard of people being rough with artifacts but that sounds like it would just destroy everything you're trying to study. That professor basically saved your entire career's worth of data with one conversation.

Oh great, so I basically gave those pots the world's most destructive wash before breakfast.
