How I Hunt Down Old Newspaper Articles Now vs. How I Did It in 2015
Back around 2015 I was trying to find a write-up about my grandpa's shop in a small town paper in Ohio, and my method was pretty dumb. I drove 40 minutes to the county library in Chillicothe and sat in front of a microfilm machine for 3 hours, cranking the reel by hand and getting motion sick. The librarian there, Deb, was nice but she shrugged and said the paper only ran from 1952 to 1989, so that was that. Now when I want something like that, I start on Chronicling America for the free scans, then hit the state digital archive, and if it's behind a paywall I check if any nearby university has it open. The thing nobody mentions is that small town papers often got bought up by bigger chains, so the name on the masthead changed and that's why your search keeps coming up empty. I found the exact article in 20 minutes once I searched the parent company's name plus the year. What's your go-to for local papers that never made it online? I'm always looking for new ones.
