I used to dig through old message boards by hand, now I just paste a URL into the Wayback Machine CDX API
Back around 2009 I was hunting down a wiring diagram for a 1980s truck and spent three nights clicking through dead forums, saving pages one by one before they vanished. Now when I need some old page, I skip the normal search box and go straight to the Wayback Machine's CDX endpoint in my browser, which lists every snapshot for a URL in one plain text dump. No plug-ins, no account, just a URL pattern and it hands you the date stamps. What changed for me was finding out regular search engines barely index anything older than the mid 2000s, so all that old board stuff sitting on a server in someone's basement was pretty much invisible. I keep a little text file with the CDX query saved so I can swap in any domain in about ten seconds. I still dig manually when it's an image that never got archived, but that happens way less than it used to. Anybody got a trick for pulling pages the Wayback Machine skipped the first time around?
