A guy at the bus stop flipped my whole view on mushroom ID
Last fall in Portland I was waiting for the 4 bus and this older dude saw me taking photos of some shelf fungus. He asked why I was only looking at the cap shape and told me to smell it and feel the pore surface. At first I thought it was nonsense, but he pointed out how the texture and odor beat any app I had on my phone. Now I always check those two things first and I actually got a correct ID on a tricky species that stumped me for about 2 years. Has anyone else had a stranger hand them a better field trick than any guidebook?
