Broke my grandpa's draw knife trying to fix a chair leg on Tuesday

I was shaping a replacement rung for an old rocking chair and the blade caught a knot, then snapped clean near the handle. The tool is from the 1960s, my grandpa used it for 40 years, and I've had it for 5. I tried using a spokeshave to finish the job, but it just felt wrong, like I was cheating the wood. Now I'm wondering if I should try welding the blade back or hunt for an identical vintage one online. Has anyone else ruined a family tool and had to decide between repair or replacement?
