DAE blow $140 on a home pen turning starter kit and make nothing but ugly firewood?
I got into pen turning as a hobby about 8 months ago, watched some videos, and bought a $140 starter kit with a mandrel, blanks, and bushings. The problem is that the cheap bushings in those kits wobble just enough that the barrels come out out of round, and I burned through six acrylic blanks in one afternoon trying to get a clean fit. A guy at a woodworking meetup in Lansing told me the stock bushings are basically junk and to buy a $20 set cut to tighter tolerance, which fixed most of it. Now I have a shoebox of lopsided pens I can't even give away, and I'm wondering if anyone else got suckered by these all-in-one starter bundles.
