Got told to 'trust the process' on a $15 thrift store theremin, blew my mind
My buddy Dave who runs a synth repair bench in Portland told me to stop fighting my cheap theremin and just map out its quirks for a month before touching anything. I ignored him for two weeks because the pitch antenna kept jumping half an octave whenever my cat walked past. Then I actually tried his advice, kept a little notebook of where the dead spots were, and realized the thing was repeatable in a weird way. Now I can play 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' without it screaming at me, which is more than I can say for my $400 one. Has anyone else found that garbage gear just needs a different approach instead of replacement, or was Dave just lucky with this specific unit?
