My compass app failed in Joshua Tree, so I learned to read shadows off a rusty fence post

Phone died at 4pm near Barker Dam with the sun low, and after 20 minutes of panic I realized the angle of my shadow against that old wire fence told me exactly which way the ranger station sat, has anyone else got a weird low-tech trick that got them out of a jam?
