Self defense class taught me my flashlight grip was backwards for 14 years

Carried a tactical light for over a decade. Always held it with the beam pointing out, thumb on tailcap, standard stuff. Signed up for a low light class in Portland last Saturday. Instructor had us do a wall drill and stopped me within ten minutes. Said a proper defensive grip has your hand over the top, light tucked under your forearm. Weirdly, it makes sense now. You get light where you look without silhouetting your own hand. It felt wrong at first but kind of clicked. Took me that long to realize I was essentially handing someone a target marker of where my weapon was. Anyone else had a basic skill flip upside down that late in the game?
