Showerthought: I counted 47 little free libraries in one afternoon and now I can't stop grading them
Last Saturday I biked 14 miles through the neighborhoods on the east side of Grand Rapids just to count those little wooden book boxes people put in their front yards. I found 47 of them, which honestly surprised me because I thought maybe there were 10 at most. What got me hooked is that they all have a personality, like one was shaped like a tiny barn and another was an old newspaper box painted bright yellow. I started keeping a little notebook with a grade for each one, and the best boxes all had the same things: a clear plastic window so you can see what's inside, a roof that actually keeps rain out, and no moldy paperbacks jammed in sideways. The bad ones are sad, man, I saw at least 9 with swollen wood and water damage because the door didn't seal right. A retired guy named Dale caught me taking notes outside his and talked my ear off for 20 minutes about how he swaps out the books every Sunday after church. So my question for you all, does anyone else have a weird system for rating stuff in their neighborhood, or am I the only one doing this?
