That $14 thrift store sewing gauge ended up being my best repair tool

My denim jacket blew a seam at a bus stop in Portland two weeks ago, and I had zero sewing skills. I grabbed this cheap metal hem gauge from a Goodwill bin for $14, looked up one YouTube video, and fixed it in ten minutes. Has anyone else found a tiny random tool that completely bailed them out of a dumb situation?

Wait, did the gauge actually help you sew straight seams, or did you just use it to fold the fabric edge before stabbing the needle through?
